Embrace Pressure During your Practice to Play your Best!

Two of the greatest players of the game embraced pressure. That is how they played their best when the chips were down. Both Tiger and Jack put pressure on their practice sessions to emulate shots they would have to face in upcoming tournaments. This is a great way to get ready for your next big event or even just your next weekend round. Use a score card and imagine the shots you will have on certain holes. Hit those shots and simulate the pressure you would feel on the course. Use the same on the putting green too. All great players would pretend that putts on the practice green were to win a Major. This helps your mind and body get accustom to making shots when they count. You'll soon start to see your scores drop and will learn to embrace your game when the pressure is on.

Bounce You Way to a Better Wedge Game!

    By Bernard Sheridan
One of the best things you can do for your short game is to learn more about bounce.
Bounce is the depth of the trailing edge of the sole of your wedge. If the bounce is high( represented by a number- higher 12- lower - 8) the leading edge of the club will sit off of the ground at address if you set the club up on the bounce. This high number is the club to hit when you are in soft sand or a fluffy lie in deep rough. The lower the bounce the better it is off of tight lies and firm conditions in the bunker.
Let's say you hit your approach shot into the bunker on a rainy day. When you get in you can feel the sand under your feet is wet and firm. This is when you pull out your wedge with a bounce of 8. Now the leading edge can dig in shallow and pick the sand and the ball out. The reverse would be true if you where in a bunker with soft sand and lots of it. If your feet were to dig down deep you would use more bounce like a 10 or 12. This would take more sand and make the shot easier to get up and out landing softly. You should have at least two different types of wedges in your bag to vary the bounce on different lies that you might face during your round. So stop by your local ProShop and check out some different wedges. Hit a few of each bounce and see how it will help your game.

2013 US Open Merion Golf Club Returns

    By Bernard Sheridan
    CEO/Founder/Director of Instruction
    Par Breakers Golf Academy

This June the U.S. Open returns to Merion Golf Club in Haverford Pa. This historic return of the biggest golf event of the year has the Philadelphia area a buzz with anticipation. Many of my students come into Par Breakers and a main topic is this years Open Championship. Even though the layout is short (under 7000 yards) by U.S. Open standards Merion will prove a hard test to the players of today as it's did to past champions. With high rough and blind shots into tucked pins and around dog legs the last five holes will be a stern test. We will see lots of irons off the tee and players will have to carve their shots carefully. Favorites will be Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson and Keegan Bradley. All of these players have the game to shape their shots into and around corners. Tiger's game is spot on going into this event and now that things are falling in place so will the putts on the fast small greens of this iconic site. Many past champions of old claimed their place in golfing history at Merion. Bobby Jones won the Grand Slam here and Ben Hogan made his remarkable comeback form being close to the grave in a car crash. Lee Trevino carved his spot in a playoff to Jack Nicklaus in 1971. Who do you think will make their mark in the golfing history books this year? Leave you comment below and let us know your pick.
Mine is Tiger! From Par Breakers Golf Academy, I'll see you at the U.S.Open at Merion 2013!

Par Breakers tests 3D Swing program in May-June 2013

Par Breakers will be testing a new 3D swing program to add to it's lesson program. Swing Guru is a 3D swing analysis program that shows the students swing from several angles along with weight shift plate to see everything about your swing. it can also be used as a practice program so Par Breakers students can work on staying on plane and get instant feedback as to where their swing is at any point of the swing arc. This is cutting edge and Par breakers will be testing this product for the next 30 days starting May 21st, 2013. For more information check out this link Swing Guru. If you would like to be a part of testing this new software at Par Breakers give us a call at 215-518-0435 and sent up your appointment to "Take Control of your Game!"

Find your personal tempo to improve your putting

Find your personal tempo to improve your putting

    Ernie Els putting tempo
Tempo is something that is built into us as human beings.
When we walk our arms go back and forth at the same pace. This is because we live on a gravity driven planet.
We need to use this natural tempo that evolution has built into us to control our distance on both long and short putts.
Let’s do a little test so you can check your personal tempo.
Let your arms hang by your side and throw away your arm like you were throwing a ball to someone next to you. Then just let your arm fall back. Don’t hold it back or force it back. Just let it fall.
Now, do the same with a putter in your hands.
Just throw the putter back and let it fall. Let it hit the ball as it falls and check the distance the ball travels. Now throw it back the same distance again with another ball and let it fall and hit the ball.
Did that ball travel the same distance as the first one?
It did if you threw back the putter the same distance on the backstroke, and now you are finding your own tempo to control distance.
The longer your backstroke the longer the putt will roll. The putter’s tempo as it falls will always be the same. The force of impact will change only with the length of your backstroke.
Give this a try on the putting green and see how much better your own tempo will help you control distance on the greens.

C.J. has been a student since the Fall of 2012. he has taken six one hour lessons and his game is progressing nicely. Here is a look at a few word CJ wrote me in an an email 04/29/2013.

     Hi Bernie,

Just wanted to let you know our club at Cobbs Creek won the Philly Publinks Match Play Championship this weekend against other local clubs:

I swept my matches (we play 3 6-hole matches for a pt each, then another pt for the full 18 hole match) with my low score of the season at Jeffersonville. Shot 76, have never shot lower than 85 at that course from the back tees. Finished it off in style with a 280 yard drive down the middle and wedge to 6 feet for birdie on my last hole.

Thanks again for the help with the swing, cya on Thursday.

Congratulations C.J. on your win and here's to many more to come for you and all of the students who compete in events around the Philly section.

Par Breakers Golf Academy Joins The Putting Zone Team

Par Breakers Golf Academy Director of Instruction had three days of training with Geoff Mangum Founder of The Putting Zone at Spring Hollow Golf Course. The Putting Zone is the most
scientific method to putting to date. This method allows the player to swing freely to their natural tempo. Find their own distance control with touch and understand how to read greens along with aim. Once the player understands these perimeters a smooth fluid stroke will appear and putts will begin to drop from any distance. The Putting Zone is by far the only way to putt lights out on a regular basis. So if you want to drop more putts and shots off your score make sure you contact Par Breakers Golf Academy in Limerick PA. 215-518-0535. You are guaranteed to drop more putts or your money back!

Bernard Sheridan now US Kids Certified Instructor

Bernard Sheridan adds another certification to his long list of achievements in golf instruction. This April I attended the certification course given by US Kids Golf for instructors. The program was a one day session in Jackson NJ. It covered the US Kids Golf guide lines to teaching kids the greatest game of golf along with building a solid moral foundation and instilling golf skills is kids. I am honored to be able to join this elite group and look forward to continue passing on the skills and examples of fair play to junior players. Along with these skills the course programming that goes with US Kids is fantastic. They have a wonderful three step learning program that help them hone kids skills in golf and several game based learning drills to keep it fun and fast paced for everyone involved. Along with these programs are tournaments that are run on a local and national level for kids to go as far as possible in the game of golf. I am excited to implement these methods into my already successful junior program to make them even better than before.

    Welcome Back Tiger!

Tiger Woods is back to regain his title as the number one player in the world rankings and number one in Fed Ex Cup points. He did it by winning his third event of 2013 at Bay Hill home of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando Florida. It was his eighth win at Bay Hill tying him with Sam Snead as the only other player to win the same event eight times. The best thing about Tiger's return is that it is great for the game of golf. Anytime Tiger is in the hunt more viewers follow the event and more interest  across the board is turned to golf. This bring more players to the game and that in turn means more revenue for golf courses and equipment suppliers. That is not only good for the work force in golf but for the economy in general. I'm not saying that Tiger will single handily turn the economy around but for those who are in the golf industry it will surely help. Here's to Tiger winning more and more and making par breakers highest list on tour stats. Congratulations Tiger and keep the wins coming in a Major way. If you know what I mean.

    Mind over Matter

Stacy Lewis is the number one players on the LPGA Tour. Her story should be an inspiration to everyone who thinks they can't achieve their goals. When Stacy was a young girl she had serious issues with her lower back and underwent a operation. She had pin placed in her back to align her spine. She though she would never swing a golf club again. But her desire to reach her dream as an LPGA Player were not only reached but surpassed beyond her highest hopes. She is now the number one ranks female player in the world. The mind is a powerful thing. Greater than even we feel we could ever be. If you want to you can achieve any goal you wish. All it takes is desire and drive to never give up no matter what the odds are. If you want to play better or just be that person you have always admired then take a lesson from Stacy. Never ever give up and keep your eye on the prize. You can do it and be what ever you desire as long as you stick to your goals and do all you can to move just one step closer each and everyday. Congratulations to Stacy Lewis on making her dreams come true!

Neucrue Golf Takes a Lesson at Par Breakers

Par Breakers Golf Academy – Golf Lesson

I recently had the opportunity to get a lesson with Bernard Sheridan of Par Breakers Golf Academy in Limerick, PA.  His qualifications include:
    • Founder of Par Breakers Golf Academy
    • Certified Golf Channel Swing Fix online instructor.
    • Golf Writer at The Golf Channel Instruction Blog.
    • Certified By USGTF , Impact Zone Golf, Body Balance Fitness, Mizuno Certified Club Fitter
    • Inventor of the Putting Disc and Par Breakers Laser Swing Trainer and the Quantum Core Swing Method.
    • Specialties:  Golf Instruction at all levels and Quantum Core Rotation.
I spoke with Bernard about his background, philosophy and swing thoughts.  He said that he is the working man’s teacher and uses anything from alignment sticks to playground balls to make the swing better.  His influences all start at the core.  Jimmy Ballard was the main name that he mentioned.  He also mentioned the Golfing Machine and Bobby Clampett’s Impact Zone.  Swings are different, but the dynamics of all good golf swings are the same.  He gives lessons online, inside at his facility and on the course.
    Lesson
To start out Bernard had me hit 8 iron into the Flightscope bay.  I hit 8 irons a few times, then hit 6 iron a few times.  He also captured my swing on his iPad through the V1 application.  Looking at my FlightScope details they were decent.  The main detail he noticed was that I was getting in the way of my own swing.  It all starts with my posture.  My shoulders were way forward and made my chest squished.  I’ve been doing it for so long that I could get around it, but I was getting stuck often.  My stance was also slightly closed.  I had a very steep shaft angle coming back down from the back swing and I had to catch up to the ball quick that way.
So what we worked on was a pre-shot routine to take care of most of the posture issues and getting my swing bottoming out 4 inches after the ball.  He mentioned that most pros swings bottom out 4 inches after the ball and that is why they take divots after the ball.  So I start behind the ball. Visualizing what shot to hit.  Then pick a target.  Then move to the side of the ball. Picking a near target a few feet in front of the ball.  Line up the face to that near target and align body.  Stand up straight and push my shoulders back and chest out.  Then lift the club up and take my grip.  Drop my hands straight down.  Push my hips back and add some knee flex to where I feel comfortable. Then take a practice swing to get tempo and swing feel.  Then address the ball and hit it.  Hold the follow through until it lands to keep balance.  Creating a routine helps create good swings and builds confidence.  I added ten yards to my 6 iron after adjusting the posture and ball position.  All in an hour lesson.
Bernard is good at related aspects of the swing to other parts of life.  The swing is first like adjusting a drum head.  You have to work it from all angles and get all of the angles right.  After playing and tuning it for awhile, then you just have to make fine tune adjustments before playing.  A singer doesn’t just go perform at a concert.  They do mic checks and rehearsals before the performance.  My back swing kept going when my body stopped.  A boxer doesn’t keep his arm going back after he is set to punch.  He would lose energy in the punch.  My posture was bunched and shoulders forward.  I couldn’t shoot a free throw in my normal posture and needed my shoulders back to stay out of my own way.  It is simple comparisons that make the swing make sense.
At the end we went over two drills to do.  The first is the core rotation drill.  It is a partial swing with two alignment sticks set up in front of and behind the ball.  Keeping the butt of the grip toward my left front belt loop I would make a short swing keeping the toe of the club pointing toward the middle of the back alignment stick and the far point of the front alignment stick on the follow through.
Watch here – Core Rotation Drill
The second is the posture drill.  Taking a normal stance then backing your butt against a wall it so it touches at the points of the inside of your back pockets.  On the back swing move to the right side and on the follow through move to the left side.  During the release move from the wall.

Tiger Gets By with a Little Help from His Friends

Tiger won his second event the Cadillac Championship with a little help from his pal Steve Stricker. Seen here Tiger gets a quick putting lesson along with a few others on positions and tempo. Tempo of the putting stroke has a great deal with keeping the ball online and distance control. Once a player like Tiger has a few putts drop in a practice session and begins to feel his tempo he can zero in and start to roll the rock into the heart of the cup. As we saw this past week Tiger's putting lead the stats at the event and his short irons are coming together. This combination from a player like Tiger will put him back on top of the leader board in almost every event he enters. So here's a lesson we can all learn from Tiger's win this week. No matter how well you play this game there is always something we can learn from another player. Of course it has to fit our game but with a little help from your local Golf Pro or from Par Breakers Golf Academy online  you just might find what you have been looking for to take down that handicap.

Golf MTRx Comes to Par Breakers

Par Breakers Golf Academy is on a quest to help you ,"Take Control of Your Game! "
We have added Zeroline Golf MTRx app to our arsenal of tech toys to help you get the most out of your swing. This little app gives us more information about your core rotation than anything else on the market.

    Motion Capture

    Motion Capture
Golf MTRx captures pelvis turn, tempo, speed, acceleration and deceleration. It then takes that data and analyzes it against the professional tour averages. After each swing, you will be able to simply compare your swings against pro averages and the app will then provide feedback on how to improve your swing.
    Pelvis Turn
Golf MTRx conducts motion analysis by measuring angular rotation of your pelvis during the backswing, impact and follow-through. Knowing how these numbers affect your swing will make you a better player.
    motionDTempo
The app keeps track of your tempo, the ratio of your backswing time to downswing/impact time, letting you know if your tempo is causing inefficiency in your swing.
    motionCAcceleration/Deceleration
Golf MTRx shows your acceleration and deceleration in kd/s/s (thousand degrees per second per second).
    motionFPeak Speed
Golf MTRx captures the rotational speed of the pelvis in degrees per second (d/s).
    m scoreAnalysis (MTRx Score)
Instantly analyzes data and provides a MTRx Score with a graphical and numerical representation of the swing, highlighting the areas of weakness and prescribing specific drills for what ails your swing.Comparison
You will be able to view your swing MTRx and compare it to your previous swings or swing examples already stored on the app.

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

Michael Thompson got his first PGA Tour win this week at The Honda Classic. The key to Michael's victory was not getting ahead of himself and playing one shot at a time. Michael said that he learned to stay patient at last years US Open. He told himself he would not look at the leader board and just stick to his game plan. That's just what he did and we can all learn from his win. The next time you are on the course don't get caught up in how well you played the last hole or how many shots you need to make up for a bad hole. Just take your time and access the shot that you have at the moment. Stick to your routine and try to not worry about the result. What ever the result may be except it and move on the the next shot at hand. After the round is over add it all up. You just might have shot a better score than you thought you would. Par Breakers is here to help you "Take Control of Your Game and Learn More About Golf." For great golf tips and insight into the game subscribe to this blog today! http://www.parbreakers.com

    Pre Shot Routine Matters

HONDA CLASSIC 2013This week the PGA Tour returns to one of the toughest tracks on tour. The Honda Classic. Three of the hardest consecutive holes in golf  lovingly known as "The Bear Trap" 15, 16 & 17. These three holes can determine the winner and many have lost the event during this stretch. If you can get through then you are a survivor. Victory may be yours to have and hold or to lose. We all have courses or a stretch of holes that we play that crush a good round and pound it into the dirt of our scorecards. The best way to take control of our game and overcome our worst holes is to stick to our routine. If we stay with a solid Pre-shot routine on every shot we can get a little more on auto pilot. This is when we perform our best golf even under pressure. We have to let the mind go blank and tune in on feel. Make feel a big part of your routine this upcoming season. It will help you get through your own personal Bear Trap and claim your right to victory!

Improving your distance control and overall feel

    Bernard Sheridan
    Par Breakers Golf Academy
    Director of Instruction

Distance control is crucial when it comes to playing golf at a high level, especially as it relates to iron play.
A great way to create more control with all of the clubs in you bag, and to add more feel to your game, is this simple drill that I have my students do on the practice range.
From inside of 100 yards choose three different targets and make each a different distance. For example, I like to use 25, 50 and 100 yards to start.
Start with your sand wedge and try to hit three balls to all three of the targets you have chosen.
Then do the same drill with your pitching wedge and continue using all of your irons up to your 7-iron.
What you will find is that you will have to get inventive as you go along, choking up to take distance off of different clubs and/or adjusting the tempo of your swing.
But you’ll be surprised at how quickly you’ll begin to hone in on your feel using this drill.
You can also try this same drill up to 150 yards, using your 150-yard club first and then working your way through the longer clubs in your bag, including your long irons, hybrids and fairway woods.
Try this approach when you practice and this will fine tune your feel and distance control for all of your clubs, which will make a big difference on the course when you find yourself with an in-between yardage.

    2013 PGA Show Orlando

2013 PGA Show in Orlando FL
This years show was the first time I had the opportunity to attend. There was so much to see and so many people in the golfing industry to talk to. Above I am with Impact Zone Golf Founder/ CBS Sports/Champions Tour Player Bobby Clampett. I was certified by Impact Zone Golf and it was nice to meet Bobby in Person. He and his wife Marianna are both great people and I am honored to be a part of their vision. Along with meeting Bobby I met several other instructors and spoke with many different companies about teaching products and teaching theories. The Show was four days and even with that much time I still had a hard time seeing everything that I wanted to see. I also spent a day out in Lake Mary FL at Mike Bender's new Academy. Mike works with Zach Johnson and is a Top 100 teacher.
He showed the group around and answered questions for about an hour after the tour.
Here is Mike Bender on his uneven lie training station. The facility was awesome and I wish Mike all the best at his new location. I hope to return when I have more time to pick Mike's brain on the many ideas and insight he has on the game. I also had a few days to get out and play at Orange County National. Home of the late great Q-School. I played Panther Lake and if you ever get a chance it is a must play. Below is a shot of one of the par threes on the back nine.
